2011 Superfund Research Program Annual Meeting Held in Kentucky

Project leaders, core leaders and students represented the PROTECT program at the Superfund Research Program Annual Meeting in Lexington, Kentucky from October 23-26, 2011. We are pleased to congratulate PROTECT student Lauren Tetz, from the University of Michigan, for winning runner-up in the biomedical poster session.  PROTECT student Celys Irizarry was also highlighted for her successful application to the K.C. Donnelly externship program.

The Sunday before the meeting, many of the PROTECT team visited a local karst area.  Our host for the trip was Jim Currens with the Kentucky Geological Survey; he was joined by Pete Idstein who’s with the Geology Dept at Univ. of Kentucky.  Both Jim and Pete are avid cavers and long-term karst researchers.  Jim and Pete took the team to the Inner Bluegrass Region of Kentucky. These rocks are much older than the ones in Puerto Rico, with a different topography.  Students and researchers enjoyed the trip – thanks Jim and Pete, and thanks Dorothy for organizing the trip!
