The 2014 Superfund Research Program (SRP) annual meeting was held on November 12-14 in San Jose, California. Over 300 researchers, trainees, and administrators attended the conference from all of the SRP Centers as well as federal stakeholders, including representatives from NIEHS, EPA, and ATSDR. Twenty members of the PROTECT Center had the opportunity to attend this year’s meeting, including co-directors Alshawabkeh and Cordero, all Project Leaders, and eight trainees. Highlights from the meeting

  • Eight trainees presented during the scientific poster session, including those from NU (Ljiljana Rajic, Noushin Fallahpour, and Roza Nazari), UPR (Andrea Gonzalez), UPRM (Marvic Carmona de Jesus), and UM (Iman Hassan, Lauren Johns, and Kelly Ferguson).
  • Roger Giese, Project 3 Leader, presented during the scientific poster session as well.
  • Phil Brown (Cores B & F) and Carmen Velez (Core F) presented a poster during the separate Research Translation/Community Engagement poster session with assistance from Liza Anzalota (Core F), Monica Ramirez-Andreotta (Cores B & F), and Christine Gordon (Core B). This poster presented PROTECT’s connection with community stakeholders.
  • Tom Sheahan, Training Core Leader, presented on the PROTECT Training Program to the SRP Administrators during their break-out session.

PROTECT Center attendees would like to express their gratitude to this year’s host, UC Berkeley, as they did an exceptional job of planning and executing an engaging and effective meeting.

It was announced during the meeting that PROTECT will host next year’s SRP annual meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We look forward to seeing you all in November 2015!
