PROTECT is proud to announce that the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) has awarded to a University of Michigan team led by John Meeker (Project 1 Leader) $9.5M to establish a large-scale interdisciplinary research hub at the University of Michigan (U-M) for the new Children’s Health Exposure Analysis Resource (CHEAR) Program. Known as M-CHEAR, this grant will marshal the efforts of world-class U-M labs focused on exposure science, environmental epidemiology, molecular biology, child growth and development, human nutrition, metabolomics, epigenomics and more to examine how environmental exposures impact children’s health.
Meeker’s research using PROTECT and other cohorts has revealed that poverty, stress, and exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates are detrimental to child health and wellbeing. Meeker’s lab in particular investigates how environmental exposures impact in utero development and function, and how chemical and nonchemical exposures interact to adversely impact infant health and child development. Professor Meeker’s work for PROTECT and M-CHEAR will make great gains in our understanding of these multiple exposures, and in our ability to protect children from adverse health outcomes.
