Dr. Vélez Vega, Co-Leader of the Community Engagement Core, and trainee Colleen Murphy represented PROTECT at the 2nd Annual Rochester Global Health Symposium and UNYTE Scientific Session on April 21st, 2016. The theme of the conference was “Innovative Solutions to Combat Global Health Disparities.” Dr. Vélez Vega participated in a panel called “Hot Topics: Lessons Learned,” with a presentation on “Connections Between Premature Births and Toxic Substances in Puerto Rico: From Genomic Research to Community Engagement.” The presentation focused on challenges PROTECT and CRECE have faced, and the various lessons learned and methods developed to address these issues.
PROTECT CEC trainee Colleen Murphy presented research findings at the UNYTE Scientific Poster Session during the symposium. She presented results from a study investigating participants’ opinions, experiences, and knowledge on clinical and genomic research, as well as their preferences for methods and strategies of environmental health related education. The research was conducted in partnership with the CDC Global and Territorial Health Research Network and the University of Rochester. PROTECT will use these findings to report back study results to participants.
