PROTECT Project 4 Trainee Arshley Rey has been selected for a summer internship with the U.S. EPA Region 2 lab at the Edison Environmental Center, located in Edison, NJ. Under the supervision of John Bourbon, she will work primarily in the Metals lab to analyze samples for the presence of zinc, magnesium, lead, and other metals. These samples come from water treatment plants, tap water, rivers, or other sources in Region 2, which includes Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
During her internship, Arshley will also rotate through all the laboratories within the Edison Center, including Microbiology, Wet Chemistry, Organics, and Inorganics. She will also assist the Quality Assurance Officer in order to learn about federal quality sample procedures.
This is Arshley’s second year as an EPA intern. Last summer, she was trained in aqueous sample preparation and analysis procedures in order to identify metals that may be present in water samples. She also conducted tests for oils, Enterococcus bacteria, and Total Suspended Solids (TSS).
Arshley is an undergraduate at the University of Puerto Rico—Mayaguez campus, and is a trainee with PROTECT Projects 4 and 5, as well as the Community Engagement Core.
