Several leaders of PROTECT and CRECE presented at the American Public Health Association’s Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado on the 1st and 2nd of November, 2016. The theme of this five day conference was, “Creating the Healthiest Nation: Ensuring the Right to Health,” and it brought together more than 12,000 public health professionals from around the world to network, educate, and share experiences related to public health.
PROTECT and CRECE Co-Director José Cordero presented a talk titled “Understanding culture is key to how women respond to Zika: Lessons learned from Puerto Rico” in a session focused on the impact of Zika in pregnancy, on the Zika congenital syndrome, and on research taking place in Puerto Rico to address the epidemic. The following day, Dr. Carmen M. Vélez Vega, also a leader for both PROTECT and CRECE, presented a lecture entitled “Community Engagement and Research Translation in Puerto Rico’s Northern Karst Region: The PROTECT Superfund Research Program.”
