We are pleased to welcome several new team members: Bente Hyldegaard and Paula Guedes, who will be working in the PROTECT lab as visiting scholars, and Sarah Corley, who will be working with our centers as a Public Health Specialist. Read on to learn more about each of these talented individuals.
Bente Højlund Hyldegaard is a third year PhD student from COWI A/S and Technical University of Denmark (DTU). She holds a Master’s degree in environmental engineering from DTU, following a year of work as a consultant for COWI A/S. Being a part of an industrial PhD program, Bente studies applied science focusing on adapting electrochemical processes for in situ degradation of chlorinated solvents in groundwater as a more efficient and sustainable technology for treatment of harmful contaminant. Recently, she has received an Elite Research Travel Grant from the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Research for her creative and pioneering research. Bente is excited to have joined forces with Prof. Akram Alshawabkeh and his highly expertized research group for four months to mature the electrochemical remediation technology.
Paula Guedes is joining the PROTECT Center as a visiting scholar from the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research (CENSE) at the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa in Portugal. Her current research focuses are on: development of EK based technologies for (i) critical elements recovery from secondary resources and (ii) emerging contaminants remediation. During her stay, Paula will work on the development of advanced electrokinetic technologies for critical raw materials recovery from mine wastes. Her work is part of the e.THROUGH project.
Sarah Corley is joining CRECE, PROTECT, and ECHO as a Public Health Specialist. She comes to Northeastern after completing her Master of Public Health, with certificates in Epidemiology & Biostatistics and Health Policy & Law, from the Boston University School of Public Health. Sarah is interested in using evidence-based research to improve health outcomes and access to care for diverse populations. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Providence College in 2015.
