PROTECT’s Phil Brown presents at the Cambridge Science Festival
Phil Brown, Director of the Research Translation Core and Co-Director of the Community Engagement Core, joined with research translation core leaders Jennifer Kay (MIT SRP) and Wendy Heiger-Bernays (BU SRP) for a presentation at the annual Cambridge Science Festival (Please see presentation below).
The Festival was established in 2007 and now includes 10 days of events, with more than 100,000 visitors annually, held in more than 70 different venues from Cape Cod to Central Massachusetts, and with more than 100 collaborators. The session that Phil presented in, “You Are Being Exposed (But you Don’t Have to Be),” presented a public-oriented view of the contaminants studied by each research center, combined with many clear strategies for reducing exposure. Phil noted the positive overlap in approaches across the SRP Centers in terms of strong community engagement, and he noted that the team-oriented approach to the science of each center is mirrored in the team approach that the individual SRP Research Centers have with each other.
Phil’s presentation also highlighted the unique way that PROTECT and its partner Silent Spring Institute use Silent Spring’s Digital Exposure Report-Back Interface (DERBI) to share individual results with each other, including an explanation of exposure sources, known and suspected health effects, and exposure reduction tips. During the presentation the audience was not only very engaged but had many questions for each presenter, and at the end the three panelists joined together to collaboratively offer advice on many other chemicals that people asked about.
