On November 16th, the PROTECT Community Engagement and Human Subjects and Sampling Cores hosted the first ever PROTECT Family Day. The event, held the weekend before Thanksgiving, gave the PROTECT team the chance to show their appreciation for participants and the indispensable part they play in the center.

The family day was held at Gran Parque del Norte in Puerto Rico’s Hatillo municipality and featured a variety of games and educational activities. The team worked to create a family-friendly atmosphere, and ended up welcoming 54 different families, comprising of around 170 people, throughout the day. It is the highest attended PROTECT community event from the past few years.

PROTECT’s work is not possible without the major contributions that participants make. Their willingness to work closely with the team and take time to go to clinics to complete evaluations and questionnaires does not go unnoticed. CEC and HSSC members were incredibly excited to have the opportunity to show their gratitude for what participants and their families do, especially outside of the clinical, scientific environment they usually meet in.

This family day was hopefully the first of many, as the team has already started discussing organizing more events like this and what more can be done to enhance family engagement.

Thank you to the CEC, HSSC, and all the participants and families that made this day such a success!
